The end of 2020 will be marked by the arrival of major titles on the current generation of consoles as well as on the new consoles, namely the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X. Among the anticipated titles is Cyberpunk 2077, a game developed and published by CD Projekt, a Polish studio known for developing the excellent The Witcher 3.
Cyberpunk 2077 is currently only planned for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, but it is entirely legitimate to wonder if a Switch version of the title is planned. So, that’s what we’ll look at in this article.
A project not ruled out by the developers
For now, the only concrete information we have about a possible release of Cyberpunk 2077 on Nintendo Switch comes from an interview. It is an interview with John Mamais, the game’s producer, who stated that “The Witcher 3 managed to be developed on Switch, who knows about Cyberpunk 2077.” We can therefore assume that the debate has not yet been settled within CD Projekt’s offices, and that the release of such a version will obviously depend on the game’s success.
Developers have not ruled out the idea of such a port on Nintendo’s console. However, they are currently too busy with the PC, PS4, and Xbox One versions of the game to see if such a project is feasible.
A version with downgraded graphics
The first thing we can assert is that if a Switch version is indeed in development, it will offer graphics far below what the PC and console versions offer. This is indeed what happened with The Witcher 3. The game was eventually released on Switch but with significantly lower graphic quality than what we had on other platforms.
This phenomenon is mainly due to the low power of the Switch, particularly its graphics card. Nintendo’s console is not exactly cut out for this type of game with detailed graphics and textures. Developers are therefore forced to make significant graphical concessions to have a game that can be played without any fluidity issues.
A distant release date
Of course, if CD Projekt takes up the challenge of releasing Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch, the version should not see the light of day anytime soon. The studio indeed wants to focus first on the next-gen version of the game, which for now has no release date but should be released in late 2020 or 2021. If a Nintendo Switch version of the game is developed, it should be the last in terms of priority, and the release should therefore not be before the end of 2021.
However, it is important to remember that there is a 5-year gap between the release of The Witcher 3 on PC and console and the release of the game on Switch. If CD Projekt follows this logic, the studio’s futuristic FPS should not see the light of day before 2024-2025.
In any case, do not assume that Cyberpunk 2077 will have a port on Nintendo Switch.
