The wear level of a battery is an indicator that tells you about the condition of the battery in any device, including phones and laptops. Simply put, an increase in this percentage translates to a decrease in battery life. This is normal, as rechargeable batteries do not last forever. In fact, laptop batteries tend to have a shorter life due to the number of discharge and charge cycles they undergo daily.
Over time, the battery loses the energy storage capacity it was designed to have from the first time the laptop was turned on. For example, if the battery’s capacity was 4000 mAh when new, and it has become only 3600 mAh after a period of use, this means that the battery wear level is 10%, and only 90% of the total battery capacity is usable.
There are many ways to check the laptop battery to know its condition and whether you need to change it or not. Below, we will show how to easily check the remaining battery life.
Method 1: Using Smarter Battery Software
Smarter Battery software allows you to know in detail the condition of the laptop battery and helps you make your decision about whether the device needs a new battery or if the battery has problems or suffers from energy leakage, and so on.
In addition to providing all the data about the battery, the software provides reliable means to extend the battery life practically, such as enabling calibration operations at the push of a button and changing Windows settings to minimize energy consumption as much as possible, alongside avoiding deep charging cycles (charging the battery from 0% to 100%) that accelerate the deterioration of the battery condition.
Method 2: Through the “Battery Report” in Windows
Windows system contains a hidden tool that prepares a detailed report about the condition of the laptop battery and its consumption rate over the past few days. Through the information included in this report, with a simple calculation process, we can know the wear percentage from the default battery life.
All you have to do to create this report is to open the command prompt (Command Prompt) in any way from the ways we have previously reviewed. However, the easiest way is to press the Win + S keys together on the keyboard to open the search bar and then type “CMD” or “Terminal” if you are using Windows 11, then from the search results click on the “Run as administrator” option to open the command prompt with administrator privileges.
After the CMD window appears, type the command [powercfg/batteryreport] then press Enter. The battery report will be an HTML file and is stored in a folder on the computer, so once this command is executed, the file path will be displayed in the command prompt. The next step is to go to the file and open it inside the internet browser to display its contents. You can get a lot of detailed information about battery use and capacity.
What we need now is to use the calculator application to divide the number in front of the Full Charge Capacity box by the number in front of the Design Capacity box, then multiply the result by 100 to show us a percentage expressing the remaining value of the battery life. For example, if it is 86%, this indicates that the battery wear rate has reached 14%.
